The Cyprus winter with its heavy driving rain is behind us. The sun comes out, temperatures rise noticeably. Anyone who now discovers damp patches on the wall or moisture in the basement often thinks: “No problem, from May we’ll have 35 degrees in the shade. The sun will dry it all out on its own.”
That’s a perfectly understandable thought – but from a building physics perspective, it’s unfortunately an expensive misconception for any homeowner. As independent building diagnostics specialists, we strongly advise against this approach.
Here is the building physics truth about why the sun won’t save Mediterranean masonry and why our measurement data makes professional, technical drying indispensable in most cases.
If you hang a wet towel in the sun, it dries. So why doesn’t that work for a house?
The reason lies in the proven Mediterranean construction method. Walls typically consist of hollow block stones and solid concrete. This structure is brilliant for keeping heat out in summer. However, when water penetrates the masonry through a leak, a burst pipe, or cracks in the facade, it collects deep inside the stones.
When the summer sun beats down on a wet wall from the outside, this is what happens:
The top few millimetres of paint dry off and look fine again. But the water in the core of the wall remains trapped.
The external heat warms the standing water in the dark cavities of the stones. This creates a warm, humid, tropical microclimate – the absolutely perfect incubator for aggressive black mold.
The heat slowly draws the water outward. The salt crystallises, expands, and causes plaster and paint to crack and fall off the wall.
Moisture that has penetrated deep into Mediterranean building fabric doesn’t disappear through an open window. It must be actively extracted. This is a purely physical process that must be carried out by a professional drying company.
As specialised diagnostics experts, we don’t carry out drying ourselves and we don’t sell you renovations. Our job is to measure, to verify, and to provide you with objective data.
Using capacitive moisture meters, we test the core of the wall non-destructively. We show you precisely whether your house can rely on the sun to self-heal or whether the readings make technical drying absolutely essential.
After a drying company has completed its work, we return for a final inspection. We confirm with hard data whether the values are back within the safe normal range.
Investing in an independent diagnosis is the safest first step. That way you know exactly where you stand – and that’s always cheaper than having to strip all the plaster off in autumn.
